READING FESTIVAL IN SOUTH-EASTERN ANATOLIA
Can Publishing Company, writers and drama artists are to support the "Reading Festival in South-eastern Anatolia" organised jointly by the GAP Administration and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
(21 February 2006)
At present, there are libraries at the provincial centres of Batman, Gaziantep and Sanliurfa in South-eastern Anatolia for children working in streets. These libraries are now preparing for a new event: "Reading Days" to take place from March to June 2006 with the participation of writers and drama players.
The project will be introduced to the public at a press conference to be held at Can Publishing Company on 27 February 2006 at 11:30 hours with the participation of (Can Publishers), Samiye Öz (Child Section of the Company), senior level staff from the GAP Administration and the UNDP as well as authors and drama players who will take part in and support the project.
Guests invited to the "Reading Days" include Erdal Öz, Sevim Ak, Mehmet Ali Alabora, Tilbe Saran, Bilgin Adali, Nemika Tugcu, Buket Dereoglu, Özgür Özgülgün, Cemil Kavukçu, Çetin Öner and Göknil Genç.
The Can Çocuk Publishers has been organizing "Reading Days" in Istanbul for the last three years in order to build a strong relationship between children and books and help children have access to books. During this activity, visiting writers and drama players meet children, read parts from books selected from the publications of the company and discuss various issues with children.
The Company will contribute to the "Project for the Rehabilitation of Children Working in Streets" by carrying its "Reading Days" to the provinces of Gaziantep, Sanliurfa and Batman where the project is presently carried out under the "Programme for Strengthening Regional Development and Reducing Social and Economic Disparities within the Region-Stage II" implemented jointly by the GAP Administration and UNDP.
Under the project mentioned above, libraries are being launched at centres for street children, which are presently active in three provinces (Batman, Gaziantep and Sanliurfa). The event will take place for the first time in the region from March to June 2006 again with the participation of celebrated writers and drama players.
