MULTI-PURPOSE COMMUNITY CENTERS

About ÇATOM

Multi-Purpose Community Centers (ÇATOM), are community centers working with women in urban areas that receive large numbers of migrants and in rural areas of Turkey’s Southeastern Anatolia region. First ÇATOMs were founded in late 1995 through the cooperation of Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP), Sanliurfa Governor and UNICEF. In 1996, management of ÇATOMs were transfered to a joint mechanism run by GAP and the Development Foundation of Turkey (TKV). There are 28 ÇATOMs the end of June 2003 across the Southeastern Anatolia region of Turkey.

The main objectives of ÇATOMs are to emphasize the individuality of women, to increase the level of women’s participation in social processes, to improve development indicators, and to contribute to a gender-balanced and sustainable human development in the region. In the long term, ÇATOMs aim to become a regional grassroots non-governmental organization.

The handicrafts presented on this website are hand-produced by girls and women who participate in education programs and cultural activities of ÇATOMs. Our goal is to tell you more about ÇATOMs, and to present and market ÇATOM handicrafts nationally and internationally.

All profits made from the handicrafts are transferred directly to the girls and women who participate in ÇATOM’s income-generating programs. This allows us to create a direct contact between the producer and the consumer. The profit made from each product that you purchase on this website makes a difference by providing an economic resource for girls and women to improve the living conditions of themselves, their families and their communities.
